Cucumbers
7 commentsMy friend gives me cucumbers from her garden. I saw these cucumbers sitting there and a memory came back to me.
I had a memory of my mother putting thinly sliced cucumbers in a bowl with ice cubes, vinegar and water in the refrigerator. I don't remember exactly how she did it but I remember it had those three things in it with some pepper so I tried it. If anyone knows how its supposed to be done, please tell me. I just used half vinegar and half cold water with some ice cubes and pepper and they are in the refrigerator now. I guess we'll see...

Hi!
Being Polish and coming from a long line of picklers. Maybe I can help you out...
3 parts vinegar I like the brown apple cider vinegar.
1 part water
salt and pepper to taste.
You can also add thick slices of sweet white onion a clove or two of garlic peeled and smashed and a little whole red pepper. You can also use the brine for pickled boiled eggs. You can add spices to your liking... If they are a little too puckery add a dash of sugar... I like 'em sour...

Thank you, RJ....I really like the idea of adding the garlic and I think mmy husband would like the onions in there. I'm with you on the sugar though....sour is better!

Boy you've got my attention. I'm going to have to try this so you make sure you let us know how yours turns out. About the chicken fried steak, I am a hamburger person and my husband is the steak person. So we could eat together and let the guys eat what they want 8>) I also do not care for that yarn, I've bought it for 2 projects and hated the way they both turned out but I had to use them as gifts anyway. Have a great 4th of July and we'll chat later.

Molly,
The sad part is my daughter ate chicken fried steak for the first time in her life last night from my leftovers! Here we live in Texas and my deprived children have never eaten chicken fried steak. Well, I'm okay if I don't eat it for another 10 years!

My grandma has a recipe for delicious sweet thin freezer pickles just as you described! I'll post it later tonight for you when I get home to my cookbook.-Julie
